I recently bought a new 2014 Dodge Charger, which means it time to part with my trusty Olds Intrigue. I posted a for sale notice on a couple of local Facebook "buy, sell and trade" pages this past weekend, so far the replies have been:
Three people who were "extremely interested" but never called back
One guy who offered to help me sell the car for 20% of the asking price
One guy who tried to low-ball me for half the asking price, who then yelled at me and called me an asshole when I told him 'no.'
One guy who was supposed to meet me at a local Publix market on Sunday morning, but never showed.
Three or four people who want to know if they could pay in installments, including one woman who could afford $100.00/month. (If a bank won't lend you money, why would I?)
And one woman who had a long sob story about her sick mother and special needs child, who was going through a nasty divorce and just wanted me just to give her the car. I stopped reading after her statement "God will reward you in the next life." Lady, it looks like God's been knocking you around pretty good, so what chance does someone who hasn't set foot in a church in 35 years have?
And the beat goes on......

have you taken it to carmax to see what they'd give you? Probably for much less than what you want... I checked with them before trading my Civic in, but they were $200 lower than the dealership

Trade in might not of been the worst idea ….. But then again I'm a U-scan user at grocery stores, I can't stand stupid people.

Sounds like my local buy/sell page. Hate it.

I just take the car max hit. I'll give up 10-20% of the value to never have to deal with selling a car again. Not worth the time and anguish to me.

The people expecting shit for free really gets under my skin. There's a post on my local Craigslist with someone asking for a "donation of a van." For "needy people." Really? No.

"I am VERY INTERESTED in car but cannot purchase today bc I am in Nigeria on business and was unfortunately robbed of all my money and cannot get home to United States. Please wire $3,000 for plane ticket and I will arrive tomorrow to purchase car. I am very wealthy and will pay you back twice the cost of ticket, plus free timeshare!"

oh so you are that guy...glad to see you made it back after the robbery and all. The white guy we see at car shows sans footwear is just a front. Knew it. This is your real picture?

anything for sale at less than $5,000 really brings out the crazy. I scrapped my old focus last year and haven't yet gotten around to selling the summer wheels for fear of the Craig's list nutters I'll have to deal with.

A former co-worker of mine gave his 1995 Hyundai to the brother of another co-worker who claimed he was in desperate need of a car. Turns out the brother was in desperate need of paying off his crack supplier.

4 pieces of used gum, 3 arrows but no bow, and a subwoofer for your trunk. Done deal :)

If you owed money to crack dealers, technically you are in desperate need of a car, to get away from the crack dealers.

I sold my '96 prelude on craigslist back in '08, I guess I was lucky with who I was dealing with.. paid in cash and signed a letter accepting purchase as-is and final. Never heard from again. Probably a rare scenario. Good luck.

You get things like that with common/normal cars. If your dealing with less wanted/jalop cars, you get away from that run around. When I sold my 85 caprice with lt1 swap, I had two inquiries, aside from the obvious scam emails, and one of those people bought it. Same thing for my Caprice wagon, very few people interested, and those who were interested were legit.

When I sold my Escort (was asking $1500, sold for $1250), I was met with a stunning wave of indifference. Three people called, two looked at it, one had cash.
Then again, a rusty purple 5-speed shitbox isn't exactly a desirable ride.

I take it you're selling the Old on Craigslist?

I remember trying to sell an '84 Notchback Mustang on craigslist, I got one guy who told me that "it was rolled at one point" (complete lie), and someone else who was wanting to drop $500 just for the trunk lid!
I should've taken that second offer.

Publix? South Florida? I know the Facebook page "South Florida Sales"....worst thing ever. Do not try to sell things there. It won't work. Lowballers, crazy people, just waste of time. Sorry to hear that.

About 20 miles south of Atlanta, actually.
It's comforting to know that the craziness isn't limited to my neck of the woods though.

If you're ever bored, you should search and check out that page. Some of it can get entertaining.

I'm sorry to hear that. I live in Atlanta too (Top end perimeter) and sold a '94 Acura Vigor last year on craigslist and never had this much trouble. Like some other's suggested it could be the asking price. Good luck with the sale though!
